10 Minute Winter Nature Walk
Explore the sights and sounds of nature in winter with a quick and simple 10 minute nature walk.
Let’s be honest—January isn’t exactly the most inviting month for heading outside.
I.. do not like it. At all.
The cold hurts and bundling up to go outdoors feels like a chore. But even on the chilliest of days, a quick 10-minute nature walk can make all the difference for your mood, your energy, and your connection to the world around you. And it can be a meaningful way to help your kids embrace the magic of winter, one step at a time.
When we step outside, even briefly, we’re giving ourselves a break from the screens, walls, and routines. That crisp winter air wakes us up and helps us feel more alive. For kids, it’s an opportunity to move their bodies, burn off some energy, and learn to appreciate nature in all seasons—not just when the conditions are “perfect”. Plus, studies show that time outdoors reduces stress, improves focus, and boosts overall happiness for both kids and adults. We all need some of that, right?
The solution: a quick 10 minute walk
Getting outside doesn’t have to be a big production. You don’t need to plan an epic hike or brave the nearest nature preserve for hours. A quick walk down through your backyard, around the block, or through a nearby park is enough. The key is to make it easy, manageable, and—most importantly—fun.
The secret? Bundle up! Wearing the appropriate clothing is going to make or break this walk. I know you have heard the saying “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing.” And, its true. Pull on your warmest coats, hats, mittens, and scarves. Layer up to keep everyone warm and dry, grab boots that will keep your feet warm and give you traction.
A winter 5-senses scavenger hunt
To make your short walk more engaging, try a 5-senses scavenger hunt! It’s a simple activity that helps everyone slow down and notice the small details in nature, even in the dead of winter. You can do it on the fly or prepare a little bingo card in advance. Here’s what to look for:
See:
- A bird flying or perched in a tree
- A patch of snow or frost
- Something green (yes, even in winter!)
Hear:
- The crunch of your boots on the ground
- The rustle of wind in the trees
- A bird’s chirp or call
Feel:
- The rough texture of bark
- The softness of a pine needle
- The coolness of snow or ice
Smell:
- Fresh, crisp winter air
- Earthy, damp leaves
- A hint of woodsmoke (if you’re lucky!)
Taste:
- Snowflakes on your tongue (or maybe a warm thermos of hot cocoa when you get home!)
By focusing on your senses, you’re grounding yourself in the moment and teaching your kids to appreciate the little wonders of winter—from the way the light glints off frozen puddles to the intricate designs of frost on leaves.
Bonus tip: make it playful
If your kids are hesitant to go outside, frame the walk as a wintertime mission or game. Can they find three different kinds of animal tracks? How about spotting a squirrel or crow? Little challenges like these add an element of fun and make them eager to explore.
When you get back home, take a few minutes to reflect on what you saw, heard, and felt. Maybe your kids will want to draw a picture of their favorite part in their nature journal or share something surprising they noticed. And don’t forget to warm up with a cozy drink or snack—a reward for braving the cold! (Yes, sometimes it is all about bribery, even for yourself!)
Even when it’s cold and dreary, getting outside for a quick 10-minute walk can lift your spirits, strengthen your bond with your kids, and help you all connect with nature in meaningful ways. So this January, bundle up, step outside, and let your senses guide you. You’ll be glad you did!
